Making a hotbed - lämpöpenkin teossa

Hello, a lot has happened in a week. I started last week building up these compost cages and filling up with weeds and fresh horse manure. I've been watching swedish Sara Bäckmo's Youtube channel during cold winter months and there I got the idea. Sara has made a video about hotbed in a greenhouse and she used weeds as material in her cultivations box. I'm kind of mixing these two methods. I have a lot of grass and weeds and I'm hoping that the warmth of the hod bed is high enough to kill the weeds. So, fingers crossed.

As you can see there comes a smaller raised bed between two hot beds. I've ordered a 1m3 compost to fill these up and it should be arriving this week on easter friday. I had my son with me at the allotment and he was the official photographer of the day and a helpful digger.

Allotment update - palstakuulumisia

Last weekend I was at the allotment with children. They just love being there, doing their own things. Mainly digging holes, playing or building a bughotel.. Weather was super nice, really warm sunny spring day.

I've been clearing out "the back". Pile of half rotten material, blackberry sticklings, overgrown blackberries, plastic, tiles.. In two week I'll get the back area ready. But we actually got something visible done: compost area is better now and first peas are sown. And I've planted the ones I've found from the Pile.

• some perennial plants
• bulbs (muscari?)

Olimme lasten kanssa viime lauantaina palstalla hommissa. Minä perkasin takaosan multakasaa ja lapset hommailivat omia juttujaan. Varsinkin Poikanen nauttii kun saa puuhailla: kaivaa kuoppia, etsiä keppejä tai rakentaa ötökkähotellin. Tuntuu kuin joka kerta palstalle tullessa takaosa (Kasa) näyttää aina vain yhtä ruokottomalta (ei kuvamateriaalia..)multaa, puoliksi maatuneita kasvinosia, muovia, tiilia ja piilotettuja karhunvatukan oksia joka paikassa.

Kasan perkaus jatkuu ja saimme jotain näkyvääkin aikaiseksi: kompostialue on valmis ja ensimmäiset herneet kylvettu. Kompostista poistin pohjan aikaisemmin viime viikolla ja nyt odotellaan, että alkaa toimimaan. Lisäksi olen istuttanut ne kasvit mitkä olen takaosan kasasta löytänyt:

• 2 marjapensasta (punaviinimarja)
• jokin köynnös?
• perenna, jonka jaoin ja irrottelin rikkaruohot juurien välistä
• pikkusipuleita (helmililja?)

Silver: Bughotel. Negotiation skills in use. They ended up to a brick walls and tile sealing.

Talvesta kevääksi - Winter turns into spring

Nowadays is it not common that channels get frozen during the winter. Thanks for the cold period in February some of the channels did freeze and people could skate on ice. Last week we've been enjoying nice spring weather - sun and no rain. These pictures were taken just a week a go, before it started to warm up. I think the best thing in Dutch spring is that bulbs are rising and they are everywhere - Just love it so much.

Nykyään ei ole ollenkaan tavallista, että kanavat jäätyvät kunnolla joka talvi. Pari viikkoa sitten joillakin kanavilla päästiin jopa luistelemaan. Kuvat ovat otettu vain viikko sitten, ennen kuin sää alkoi lämpenemään. Viime viikonloppuna nautittiinkin ihanasta kevätsäästä - aurinkoa ja lämpöä, eikä sadetta. Parasta kuitenkin Hollannin keväässä on sipulikukkien paljous. Niitä on joka paikassa, etenkin tallaisilla nurmikkoisilla liikenteenjakajilla. Aivan ihanaa!
